What is Hypnotherapy?

When my clients first call me their first question is “What is Hypnotherapy?”. Today I would like to answer that question for you. This will provide you with some comfort and understanding as to what it is.

Hypnotherapy (Hypnosis) is a naturally occurring relaxed state in which a person’s attention is so focused that anything going on around them is temporarily blocked out or ignored. A person may focus their attention with the help of a trained hypnotherapist on specific thoughts or tasks. Guided relaxation, intense concentration, and focused attention is used to achieve a high state of awareness that is sometimes called a trance. I can describe it as being similar to the moment in which you are laying in your bed at night and you are almost in that deep sleep state with your eyes closed but you can still hear or sense what is happening around you. You are in complete control and fully conscious of what is happening.

Some myths or misconceptions are that it is mind control or that you will end up walking or acting like a chicken. Well, that might be what you consider stage hypnosis, which is used for show. That is not what hypnotherapy is. A hypnotherapist can not control your mind or make you do anything you don’t want to do. Your subconscious mind is aware of what is taking place and if you decided you didn’t want to do something you can easily take yourself out of hypnosis and come back to your conscious mind. You are in charge and in control. The hypnotherapist is just a guide and you are the one in charge.

Once your subconscious mind is open then can the hypnotherapist safely guide you to the core issue within and help you resolve any emotional or psychosomatic issue. The hypnotic state allows people to explore painful thoughts, feelings, and memories that might have been hidden from their conscious mind. It is pretty much therapy but in a more relaxed state of mind.
